Fan District in Richmond, VA
The Fan District in Richmond, VA is an old historic residential neighborhood area full of significant homes and buildings with striking architectural features. You will see gargoyles, stained glass, carved stately columns and more. The entire district is shaped like a fan as it was built around the trolley lines from the 19th century.
The entire area can be traced back to the late 17th century when it was used as farmland. After the Revolutionary War the area was separated out into lots to build a town, but those plans never materialized. After the Civil War, the area began to grow and homes were built to accommodate the population explosion. It is amazing that while only a few architects were used, the homes show a wide variety of styles such as Queen Anne, Tudor, Art Deco, Gothic, Romanesque and Colonial Revival were just a few of many that can be found in the Fan District.
A walking tour is suggested to view these historical homes and appreciate the work and architectural elements. The landscaping in the Fan District is simply gorgeous in the area and you will smell their sweet scent. There are also now some restaurants and shopping options in the area as well which cater to tourists and local alike. Be sure to stop at the Park Avenue gated playground if you have kids.
All in all, the revitalization of the area and restoration of many of these architecturally interesting homes and buildings are what draw visitors to the area. Walking through the area is a pleasant way to pass a few hours if you are in Richmond.
