Agecroft Hall in Richmond, VA
Agecroft Hall in Richmond, VA is a piece of 15th century England transplanted in a lovely setting in a neighborhood called Windsor Farms. The story behind this true English Tudor home is intriguing and something you will learn upon touring the home. Basically, the manor home housed two distinguished families in Lancashire, England for hundreds of years. However, the late 19th century saw the home in disrepair which prompted the auction of it in 1925.
Thomas C. Williams, Jr., a notable figure in Richmond at the time, purchased the home and had it shipped piece by piece from England and reassembled along the banks of the James River. This feat was truly remarkable of the time and the home was painstakingly restored, both inside and out.
Today, you can view for yourself the Stuart and Tudor styles reminiscent of the 16th and 17th centuries as reflected in the décor and furniture of the home. The intricate staircases, paintings and other historic pieces survived the years and are a big part of the tour. If you are an architectural buff, you will want to take the tour of Agecroft Hall.
The accompanying gardens are also a testament to the English style with opulent flowers that are reminiscent of the Elizabethan period. In fact, there are many herbs planted to create an Elizabethan knot garden which are a living testament to the plants that were often used for medicinal purposes back in the late 15th century and beyond.
Excluding Mondays, the Agecroft Hall and gardens are open from 10:00 a.m. to 4 or 5:00 p.m. There is an admission charge which includes a short historical film as well as a guided tour of the home while the gardens can be strolled on your own.
