Culture has always been of great importance to the people of Quebec City in Canada, and a very important part of that culture has been the live theater. An important part of Quebec City's theatrical life is the Theatre de la Bordee. In 1976 a group of enthusiastic young actors who had recently graduated from the Conservatoire d'Art Dramatique de Quebec (the Quebec Conservatory of Dramatic Arts) founded the Theatre de la Bordee. The creativity and talent of the new theater's founders immediately made a forceful impression on the theater-going public and on the critics. Thanks to the dynamic work of its first two artistic directors, M. Binet and M. Claude Jean-Jacqui Boutet, the Theatre de la Bordee has managed to carve itself an enviable place in the theatrical life of Quebec.
The company of the Theatre de la Bordee has found a loyal audience, and its subscribers are strong supporters. It is patronized by students, social organizations, senior citizens groups, and individual theater lovers who appreciate la Bordee's warm and friendly atmosphere. It is a living theater with close ties to the community, and maintains a unique personality.
The Theatre de la Bordee produces and puts on four plays per season, aimed at the general theater going public. One of its big hits was Waiting for Godot. One of the performances on schedule for 2009 is Hedda Gabler. But in addition to major world repertoire, this French language theater also presents the works of contemporary playwrights and Quebec authors. It has the support of the best artists in Quebec. After staging over 100 productions in a temporary location, the Theater de la Bordee moved to a permanent site in the restored Pigalle movie house in the St. Roch Quarter of Quebec City.
