La Compagnie des Six-Associés began offering unusual tours of Quebec City in 2000. The company takes its name from the 'Company of One Hundred Associates' that was involved in the development of New France in the 17th century. The award-winning tourism company offers distinct and memorable tours of the city, and it all started with their Skate and Ski Tour and Killers and Beggars Tour. Apart from the thematic walking tours for visitors to the city, the company runs history workshops and conference tours.
The walking tours last under 2 hours and are available every day of the week, taking visitors on a historic journey through Quebec City. The majority of the tours are in French but some are provided in English with guides dressed in character - maybe a French courtesan or the wife of a French torturer!
The tours include The Lily and the Lion - which charts the British and French influences of the past 400 years on the city, through its architecture, systems of government and religion. The Lust and Drunkenness tour takes a look at the sites of the many taverns, pubs and brothels around the city, amid tales of ill-repute and gossip. On the Crime and Punishment Tour visitors learn about the life of notorious criminals, and their tales of plunder, dueling and murder, and the gruesome punishments they would be subjected to. The Gravediggers and Doctors tour is led by Joseph Morrin, a 19th century doctor who explains about the ways in which the city's inhabitants used healing and homemade remedies to treat their illnesses.
