Musee des Ursulines de Quebec in Quebec, QC is a living and working testament to the Ursuline Order originally founded in 1697. It was a boarding school for girls and the Ursuline nuns were the teachers, who were surprisingly quite complex in their teachings. Physics, geography and chemistry were just a few of the subjects which were normally not taught to young girls of the time.
The rich history of the Musee des Ursulines is readily apparent in the many paintings, intricate detailing of their famous embroideries and even the woodwork that was expertly handcrafted. You will see a historical perspective of their attire — the habits and school uniforms — from the 1600s to today.
A visit to the graveyard for the Ursuline order is still in use today and it is quite a humbling feeling to walk amongst the tombstones of these faceless, yet selfless individuals who worked so hard to shape the lives of young girls. They are among some of the true heroes of the area. Other things you will see besides the exquisite paintings, clothing and hand embroidery are their personal effects, furniture and antiques of the time. These things give you a true sense of how the Ursuline Sisters lived as well as the life of a student in their boarding house.
Tours typically take about an hour to view the graveyard, chapel, museum and school. Be advised that the chapel is still in operation so you will be asked not to take any photographs and be respectful of their rules. All in all, the Musee des Ursulines de Quebec is a welcome change from the other museums which are filled with histories of war and violence.
