Maison Francois Xavier Garneau in Quebec, QC is an extraordinary 19th century mansion in Old Quebec. At one time, it was the home of the famous historian Francois-Xavier Garneau. Francois-Xavier Garneau was known as a national historian for many reasons. He was a civil servant and poet as well as being a great French Canadian poet. Garneau is famous for writing Histoire du Canada, a three volume long book about the history of the French Canadian nation. The book, written between 1845-1848, was a result of a comment made by Lord Durham stating the French Canadians were a group of people that had no history and no literature. He felt the book would get his point across that the only way the French Canadians could thrive and succeed was to go out from under the British thumb, so to speak.
Francois Xavier Garneau was a man that was honored by his country for all his did to help it gain freedom. His belief was that political skill would do the country more good than military power. Looking through his former can only give a small idea of this man's greatness and nobility.
