Ex Machina is a multi-disciplinary company that brings together musicians, writers, actors, singers and technicians.& It was founded by Robert Lepage in 1994 who named the company Ex Machina — deliberately avoiding the word 'theater' in its name. The company aims to bring an innovative and experimental approach to theater by combining live performances with video art and multimedia in a collaboration of artists and technicians. Current projects include a fusion of dance, theater and opera.
Lepage, was born in Quebec and studied in Paris. His play 'Circulations' was awarded Best Canadian Production in 1984 and he soon became known internationally. He later became director of the Théâtre français in Ottawa, and was the first North American director to direct a Shakespeare play at London's National Theatre.
The Caserne, opened in 1997, is the home of Ex Machina. The Caserne stands on the site of Quebec City's first stock exchange. A firehouse with an impressive facade and high tower was later built on the site when the stock exchange demolished. It was designed by Georges-Émile Tanguay who also designed Quebec's City Hall. It fell into disrepair in the 1980s, and was in danger of sinking into the river. The building underwent a full rescue and restoration program in the early 1990s to secure the property and turn it into Ex Machina's production center. It was opened in 1997 and comprises two studios, state of the art technology and workshops for small performances and technicians. The facilities can be rented for private showings, film shoots and recordings.
