A stunning recreation of the period between 1535 and 1536 when Jacques Cartier and his shipmates anchored near the Iroquoian village of Stadacona forms the central theme of this extraordinary national park. Located on the banks of the St. Charles River, the Cartier-Brebeuf National Historic Site also bears with it the legendary reputation of being the first home of Jesuit missionaries as they set foot on Quebec soil.
An amalgamation of the European and Amerindian cultures permeates the park which pays tribute to its heritage with an array of exhibits housed in the interpretative center. Of these, the exhibit which details the voyages of Jacques Cartier draws visitors from all over the country. There is also an interpretation kiosk which is dedicated to the Jesuits, while the park is interspersed with monuments commemorating Jacques Cartier and the great chief Donnacona of Stadacona. The Cartier-Brebeuf National Historic Site offers educational tours where you can journey through the exhibits and view the Iroquois longhouse and its surrounding gardens. However, as locals will vouch, the best way to explore the grounds is on a self-guided tour either on foot or by bicycle. The bi-lingual staff offers information in French and English as they enlighten you about little known facts about the park and its history.
There are also several events hosted at the Cartier-Brebeuf National Historic Site, the details of which you can call ahead to confirm. While you're here, don't forget to try the famous cedar tea at the interpretative center, which is a distinct remnant of the Iroquois tradition.
Admission to the park is charged at about CAD 3.50, with special discounts for children and seniors. If you're bringing the family along, you can even avail of a special rate of CAD 8.75 for your party. The Cartier-Brebeuf National Historic Site is open to visitors from 10 am to 5 pm all through the week in the months between May 9 and September 4, 1 pm to 4 pm from September 6 to September 25 and by reservation only between September 26 and May 8.
