The award-winning Carrefour International de Théâtre de Québec was founded in 1991, and alternates with the Théâtres d'Ailleurs event to bring innovative, classic and favorite theater productions to Quebec City. Since its beginnings the internationally renowned festival has hosted nearly a hundred performances and welcomed artists from local regional and international theater companies and co-operatives. It has attracted nearly a 100,000 visitors and local residents. The festival is held during the month of May in many venues across the city including the Grand Théâtre de Québec, Palais Montcalm, and the Théâtre Périscope. The events features some performance in English or others with subtitles. There are matinée and evening performances with the opportunity to meet the artists involved in an informal setting.
The festival's repertoire includes the best in classic play performances and innovative new works. Many local artists and volunteers are involved in staging the festival including backstage technicians, and the production and promotion of the festival. The event also has a role in the promotion and development of the local theater and arts scene. The festival is a four-times winner of the prestigious Masque awarded by the Académie Québécoise du Théâtre. The 9th Carrefour International de Théâtre will have special events as part of the 400th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Quebec City.
The Passe Orange is available for young people under the age of 30 and provides reductions in ticket prices. There are also discounts for seniors and subscriptions offer discounts if tickets for multiple shows are purchased.
