An educational institution founded in 1964, the World Forestry Center offers both indoor and outdoor activities for adults and children to learn about the world's forests and trees, the preservation of resources, and the principles of sustainable forestry. The Center, located in Washington Park, houses a Special Exhibits Gallery, provides activities in its Leave No Trace program, and maintains the Discovery Museum, a wonderful hands-on experience for all ages.
The Center also owns and operates two working forests, both donated by landowners who wanted their properties protected from development. The Magness Memorial Tree Farm, located twenty miles south of Portland, is the largest of the Center's properties and features several miles of hiking trails and interpretive programs, an education center, hands-on outdoor environmental activities, log bunkhouses for overnight camping, and free guided tours.
