Established by the Servite Friars in 1924, the Grotto is one of the loveliest and most unique Marian sanctuaries in the world. The main attraction, Our Lady's Grotto, was carved out of a solid cliff wall and features a natural stone altar, a large outdoor gallery of religious art, and over a hundred sculptures ensconced along the pathways. Visitors can follow the flower-lined walkways to the Chapel of Mary, a 500-seat chapel made of cliff rock from the Grotto and featuring beautiful murals and statues.
The Marilyn Moyer Meditation Chapel is the most modern and dramatic of the Grotto's structures. Made entirely of glass and resting atop a sheer rock cliff, the chapel offers visitors a stunning panoramic view of the Columbia River and the Cascade Mountains. The Grotto celebrates many events throughout the year, including the Blessing of the Animals, the Festival of Lights at Christmas, and the International Freedom Day Mass.
