Smith Rock State Park near Portland, OR is a state park located in the town of Terrebonne. It's very popular for rocky climbing because of the many tuff and basalt cliffs. It has challenging parts for all skill levels of rock climbing. Smith Rock is even considered the first place to start the sport of sport climbing, a sport like rock climbing where the climber has to rely on parts of the rock for their anchors and support.
Smith Rock State Park is also widely used for its many miles of hiking trails. A wonderful site for many tourists is the Crooked River, which flows into the South Fork Crooked River and Beaver Creek. The Cascade Range of Oregon is also a popular tourist site. The Cascade Range is a range of mountains from the western North America. They include volcanic peaks as well as non-volcanic. The landscapes here were developed by the flow of the flowing basalt as well as the volcanic ash explosions-both results of volcanoes.
Many tourists come here to hike to Monkey Face. Once you get to the top, the view of the many Cascade peaks is exceptional. You'll want to start early in the day as the temperatures can get quite high early in the day. It's not unusual to see temperatures of 100 degrees here. There are rattlesnakes in some areas of the park so be aware of this. Park rangers may be able to give you more specifics on this.
This state park has been the site for movies on location such as The Postman and Swordfish. It's also been the location used in the filming of different westerns, one of them being Rooster Cogburn, a John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn popular film.
