Newberry National Volcanic Monument near Portland, OR is one of the newest national monuments in the nation. It's located in Central Oregon around 10 miles south of Bend. Congress established the Monument within the Deschutes National Forest boundaries in 1990. Their goal and mission is to preserve the resources and geologic landforms that exist in the area. The area where the Newberry National Volcanic Monument is located consists of 55,500 acres with an additional 10,300 acres set aside for special management. This monument, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, gives tourists the chance to see the beautiful Lava Lands of Oregon. The highest point of the Monument is known as Paulina Peak, which is 7,985 and offers and exceptional view of the High Desert and the Oregon Cascades.
Fishing is a great sport here at Newberry in the two lakes (East Lake and Paulina Lake) at Newberry Volcano, which happen to be full of salmon and trout. Thousands of visitors and tourists come to this recreational playground each year. You'll find the Crater, which is a popular hangout for cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. The Crater also has seven campgrounds with have boat ramps, group camping, sanitary facilities and even a horse camp with riding trails. Whether your plans are hiking or snowmobiling, you'll find miles of trails to explore. Many of these trails will take you right to the major lava flows or parts of the crater rim. Kayaking and rafting is very common in the Deschutes River. You'll also find a wildlife refuge managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in the area. Many avid hunters use this area for hunting during the correct seasons.
