Western PA Sports Museum in Pittsburgh, PA
The Western PA Sports Museum in Pittsburgh, PA is a 20,000 square foot museum in the Smithsonian wing of the Senator John Heinz History Center. The museum has an exhibit space that takes more than two floors.
It has hundreds of artifacts, 20 audio-visual programs, and 70 hands-on interactive exhibits. A few of the artifacts in the museum include Billy Conn's gloves and light heavyweight champion belt, Satchel Paige's baseball glove, Franco Harris' "Immaculate Reception" shoes, Chip Ganassi's 2000 Indy 500-winning race car, Arnold Palmer's sweater and golf bag, Mario Lemieux's hockey skates, the "Ultimate Steelers Fan's Car, and Chip Ganassi's 2000 Indy 500-winning race car.
Inside the Western PA Sports Museum visitors will also get to see hundreds of Pirates baseball cards and the Homestead women swimmers Olympic medals from the 1920s and 1930s.
The museum has many interactive exhibits, which are popular with children. Children can drive a powerboat. The can play a hole at Oakmont,compare their shoe size to shoes worn by Pittsburgh Steeler L.C. Greenwood, throw a football to Lynn Swann and John Stallworth in the "Quarterback Attack" exhibit.
On the screen of the two-story theater, visitors can watch Bill Mazeroski hit a World Series-winning home run or the Penguins' Stanley Cup victories. There are play-by-play broadcasts from Bob Prince and Rosey Rowswell, and a miniature golf almost-replica of the famed Oakmont Country Club including church pew sand bunkers, and similar mounds and depressions.
Visitors can roll hand sewn leather balls. They can study the state-of-the-art Hall of Fame database. They can visit the Sport and Body exhibit to test each of their reaction times.
