Watercolors Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA is located in the downtown section of Pittsburgh in the Cultural District. The Watercolors Gallery is run like a co-op, and is described as a cooperative gallery because it's run and financed by its member, which are the local artists in the area. The gallery is not limited to one media despite its name, but employs all different types such as pastels, oils, acrylic, watercolors, sculpture, stained glass and photography. The Watercolor Gallery has over 5,000 guests visiting it each year and the Convention Center considers it a destination attraction for anyone even in the near vicinity.
The Convention Center as well as the gallery itself has the goal towards making Pittsburgh a true cultural center. They want to promote opportunities for artists to begin work, promote art education and make revenue for the community. Some of the ways the Gallery proposes to do this is by offering educational art programs and hosting international shows. One in particular they've hosted is the Aqueous Open. Their plan includes hosting a different show every six weeks, with the show being from one of the members of the gallery.
The possibility of getting new local talent is greater here because the Gallery is nearby to the Heinz Hall, O'Reilly Theatre, Benedum Center as well as the Convention Center. With the state-of-the-art businesses so near, there is always budding talent waiting to join the gallery. The Watercolors Gallery is giving the artists the chance to interact with other artists, improve their professional and creative life and advance their career.
One of their most recent shows was for a new exhibit called Sweet Potato Pie, done by the Wednesday Night Painters, a group that includes current and retired art teachers, framers, homemakers, a docent for another museum and a drafting instructor. They are a fun loving group that gets together every Wednesday night in an old school room as they've been doing for the past 15 years. Their display is a collage of many kinds of pies as well as other still life.
