ModernFormations is really much more than a gallery. It serves as a premier site for displaying music and dramatic talent as well as fine examples of visual art. Started in 2001, ModernFormations Gallery and Performance Space added significantly to the culture of Pittsburgh, as well as to the unusual flavor of the Penn Avenue community.
ModernFormations is a popular storefront space with roots close to the street. This galley puts emphasis on introducing young artists, in separate display spaces. Various musical tastes are accommodated, with rock music, folk music and a wealth of variety shows.
The facility offers intimate-stage drama, live music from many excellent performers, and wonderful works of art in its gallery space. But the services go well beyond this, as ModernFormations also seeks to encourage enlightening discussions about performance art, films, readings and more. In a unique twist, visitors may experience the magnificent works of art from couches situated around the gallery space. Museum management also gives particular attention to artists who have not been widely recognized but are beginning to attract attention.
Current exhibitions include; Treez, dedicated to mysticism and symbolism of trees; and the Artwork of Matthew Wasiela, which features mechanical and electrical equipment. Musical entertainment ranges from hiphop and folk to punk and soul. Stage entertainment includes The Cellar Dwellers, a comedy review, and excellent poetry readings by Carolyn Elliot, Anne Marie Rooney and Sophie Klahr.
