Closing in on 25 years of existence, the Bead Museum in Glendale, Arizona, features a collection of more than 100,000 beads and items made from and with beads. Visitors find permanent exhibits and temporary displays at the Bead Museum, in addition to a wide-ranging program of education, tours and classes.
Gabrielle Liese founded the unusual facility in 1984, to focus on beads and related items from cultures around the world. Visitors can both study and enjoy art guaranteed to surprise and entice with its beauty. The museum staff focuses on serving the public as well as on educating people about the fascinating beads of the world.
Beads are widely known as some of the oldest artifacts in the world, created by humans for both practical and decorative use. Beads were originally made from stone, wood and natural objects but modern-day beads are made from a wide variety of material. Beads have, for centuries, carried special meaning in religion, ceremonies and social standing.
Individual guests are, of course, welcomed. But the Bead Museum also offers group tours that last about 45 minutes, in most cases. Staff members can answer questions about beads and bead history. The wealth of information includes symbolism, special design, and the many ways beads are used. Tour requests should be made one week before the planned visit.
The museum offers numerous membership categories, ranging from the $40 level to the $2,500 Chevron Level (Patron). Memberships have excellent benefits, including members-only previews of exhibits and advance notice of classes and educational programs. More information is available by calling (623) 931-2737.
