When it comes to the George Read House, there are many people that think that it is a very beautiful home; especially because of the age of it. The George Read House was originally built in the 1800's, which makes it over 200 years old. In fact, the George Read House is known as one of the oldest homes in Old New Castle.
In all actuality, the George Read house is not actually a house; but it is a mansion. Once you're inside of the home you will be able to see the largeness of it. In fact, the George Read home consists of 22 different rooms; which makes it 14,000 square feet. Some of the different things you will be able to see in the home are the gilded fanlights, the carved woodwork, relief plaster work and also all the silver door hardware. When it comes to the furniture of the home, it is decorated with period antiques. As for the style of the home, it is considered to be a federal style mansion. What many people like most about the mansion is that it is located on the banks of the Delaware River; along with having 1½ acres of gardens that beautifully surround the home.
Today, the George Read house is one of the most visited places in Old New Castle; as it is a very important landmark for the town. The house was designed and built by George Read; however, in 1840 the house was destroyed in a fire; which was when the George Read Garden was planted; as a remembrance.
