Garthwaite AA Field in Conshohocken, PA is the field used for sporting events in this area. This field has been around since the early 1900s. The Conshohocken Athletic Club managed to put together some extraordinary football teams in the 1920s. Their only weak link was in not having a good field where their teams could play. Sporting events were very important to the citizens of Conshohocken so they formed the Conshohocken Athletic Association. Instead of concentrating on the teams, they put forth all their energy and resources in finding a location for their teams to play.
At the end of the 1920 football season, they were able to obtain the Twelfth Street Grounds as well as some nearby property so construction began to improve and expand the facilities on the site. They put in a new softball diamond, which allowed the opportunity to sponsor a semi-pro baseball team the following year. In the fall of that same year, they concentrated on their football field and stadium. Initially, manage Bob Crawford leased part of the old Corson estate, which along with 4 other streets was also put in as part of the sporting venue. The Conshohocken Fire Company also offered their firehouse and baths for both teams to use. The construction and design of this great sporting field continued for many years.
Albert A. Garthwaite, a local philanthropist, put in many additions to the field including lockers, a main entrance and a new wall. After his death in 1967, the field was renamed in honor of him. It was called the Garthwaite Stadium and often just called the A-Field. Today this wonderful field is home to many of the high school, youth and semi-pro teams. It's now referred to as Garthwaite AA Field and is a place of true historic value.
