Elfreths Alley Museum in Philadelphia, PA
The Elfreth's Alley Museum in Philadelphia, PA is part of one of the continuously oldest occupied suburban streets in the country. There are at least 30 families who are literally living in a piece of history in the homes along this street. One of the homes, House 126, was turned into the Elfreth's Alley Museum. These row houses were originally built in the 1700s and the fact that they have withstood the test of several hundred year's time is truly remarkable.
House 126 which is Elfreth's Alley Museum was constructed in 1755 by Jeremiah Elfreth, a blacksmith. This restored row home has been furnished and refurbished according to its mid 18th century appearance. It is also the only home along the Alley that is public accessible. You can take one of the guided tours which leave every half hour and takes about 20-30 minutes. You will get to see the first and second floors along with the back yard.
The museum will depict life a few hundred years ago as well as how families were impacted by turns of events like the American Industrial Revolution. The guided tour is a great way to pass the time in a wonderfully historical way. Tickets can be purchased at House 124 which also houses the museum shop. There are tours every day of the week from March to October and Thursday through Sundays November through February. What is so cool about Elfreth's Alley Museum is that with adult admission of $5, you also get a free guide book copy of the private homes in the Alley.
