This is the first institution of this kind that was built by a United States municipality for that exact purpose. Many people come to visit the African American Museum, located at 701 Arch Street, to learn more about the heritage and culture of the African American. The four exhibit galleries that are at the museum make the life of the African American look almost self-explanatory and very interesting.
Since the African American Museum was founded in 1976, they have presented and interpreted any accomplishments and achievements of the African Americans from their beginning in pre-colonial times right up to the present. They have broken the life of the African American into the different parts of their entire heritage: their family life, their part in sports, medicine, religion, law and architecture; the large role they played in the Civil Rights movement and the important part they play in the world of entertainment.
The African American Museum has based their exhibits on three main themes, which are the Philadelphia Story, the African Diaspora and the Contemporary Narrative. The museum has over 750,000 different illustrations and objects that help to actively describe the life of the black Diaspora. You can view documents, records, artifacts, military weapons, mixed media and a huge assortment of art.
The museum also has many rare and unique materials that accurately document the history and literature of the African American life. Some of these items are photographs, music and books, programs, Negro baseball memorabilia. These items cannot be viewed without an appointment and cannot leave the museum without being signed out first.
