Martin Luther King Weekend at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA

The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is one of the nation's oldest and best museums dedicated to science and technology. The museum's science center contains an impressive collection of artifacts from the Wright Brothers, one of the world's first stainless steel aircrafts, an extensive exhibit dedicated to Benjamin Franklin, an observatory featuring five telescopes, and an enormous model of a heart used to teach about biology and human anatomy. The outdoor Science Park, open in the summer, teaches kids about science using pendulums, sundials, periscopes and mini-golf. The museum also houses the Fels Planetarium, an IMAX theater, and a theater featuring 3-D Blu-Ray technology.

Over Martin Luther King weekend, the Franklin Institute traditionally hosts a special program about Black identity. Numerous activities are offered during the program, including talks by African-American scholars and performances by African-American gospel, jazz and blues groups. Because the Franklin Institute is primarily a science institution, the program also usually features workshops and talks about the evolution of African humans. Please contact the museum directly to inquire about this January's program and events.
