Easter Workshop at American Swedish Historical Society in Philadelphia, PA
Every Easter, the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania hosts its annual Easter Workshop, where child and adult visitors alike can learn about how Easter is celebrated in Sweden. Swedish Easter is a lot like American Halloween. Legend has it that during Easter week, witches called "Easter hags" would practice black magic. As a result, the tradition in Sweden at Easter is for children to dress up as witches and go from door to door collecting candy. Kids who come to the Easter Workshop event are encouraged to dress up like witches. At the event, they can do traditional Swdeish and American arts and crafts, and then hunt for candy-filled Easter eggs on the museum lawn.
The American Swedish Historical Museum contains 12 permanent galleries that educate about and promote Swedish and Swedish-American culture, art, and history. The museum also contains one gallery that hosts temporary exhibits. Founded in 1926, the museum is the United States' premier institution for the recognition of Swedish-American contributions to art, history, architecture, science, music and technology. Please contact the museum directly for information on admission prices and current exhibits.
