Sesame Street has served as an important part of the lives of millions of children for more than one generation; ever since it was first created in 1969. Today, visitors can actually visit Sesame Street with a stop by the Sesame Place Theme Park in Philadelphia. Live entertainment, thrill rides and the opportunity to interact with all of your favorite characters from the much beloved show create a wonderful day of fun for all ages. Located in Langhorne, a suburb of Philadelphia, Sesame Place is based on the hit television children's program. As such, it features lovable characters Big Bird, Ernie, Bert and Elmo. A variety of shows, rides and water attractions are all offered and appropriate for even very young children. Sky Splash and Vapor Trail are two of the most popular attractions at the park. Sky Splash features a large raft type water slide reaching more than six stories into the air. Not only is the ride tons of fun but on clear days, you can see all the way across the Philadelphia skyline. Vapor Trail offers roller coaster adventure thrills to children as young as age three, providing them with the perfect chance to enjoy the adventures just like older kids without the dangerous heights. One of the newest attractions in the park, Elmo's World, includes dry rides for younger kids who may wish to steer clear of the water rides. The wide array of opportunities to visit with the characters will keep kids and adults busy throughout their visit. Guests can have breakfast with the characters an hour before the main park opens; however, you should be aware that this is an additional charge and is not included in regular admission. Even if you choose not to do breakfast with the cast you will have ample photo opportunities as the entire Sesame Place cast makes their way down Sesame Street twice each day. The Rock around the Block parade includes dancers, large floats, all of the characters we have come to know and love and of course, tons of music. The park first opened in 1980 in close proximity to the Oxford Valley Mall. Although the original park consisted of only three acres, several expansion projects over the years have created a space that is now 16 acres in size. Some of the expansion projects have included Sesame Island, Twiddlebug Land and Vapor Trail. In total, there are more than two dozen rides and water attractions to keep families happy and busy from the time they arrive until the time they leave. The park is completely smoke free and was the first theme park in the entire state to become smoke free. The park opens in early May and remains open throughout October. Sesame Place is located only 30 minutes north of Philadelphia on Oxford Valley Road, just off U.S. Route 1. If you are traveling from Philadelphia, take I-95 north to Morrisville and then on to Exit 46A U.S. Route 1. |
