Philadelphia, PA: The Legend of Rocky

Although the movie was first created back in 1976, today the legend of Rocky Balboa is still as popular as when it first appeared on the big screen. While visiting Philadelphia you will be able to actually view many of the landmarks that are present in the Rocky series. From jogging up the steps which lead to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where you can admire the prominent Rocky statue to many other famous landmarks throughout the city, a visit to Philadelphia could become a tribute to the famed movie all by itself.

When Rocky first came out in 1976 it was a budget film that was filmed in less than a month. Produced for just over $1 million, the film went on to make more than $117 million and won three Oscars before spawning five incredible sequels. From the beginning, the film's unique relationship with Philadelphia seemed to help propel the film to the top of the box office. Anyone speculating on the success of the movie prior to its release would certainly have thought that the odds were not only against Rocky Balboa but also against the film as well. However, much like the indomitable spirit of Philadelphia, both the character and the film found their big break. In many ways, Rocky has become somewhat of a symbol of America and even of the dreams that Americans hold dear.

The fact that the much beloved film is richly embedded with scenes from Philadelphia has forever linked the city with the movie. From the street scenes surrounding Rocky's apartment to the steps of the Philadelphia Art museum where Rocky triumphantly raises is arms in celebration as "Gonna Fly Now" reaches its crescendo, the movie is very much a tribute to the city. While some changes have occurred in Philadelphia in the last 25 years since the first Rocky movie was released, in many ways, the landmarks remain much the same.

Although Philadelphia has served as the setting for a number of big screen films in recent years, it is still remembered as Rocky's home to die hard movie buffs. A trip through the city will provide you with many pleasant memories from the iconic film.

Of course, the most popular Rocky landmark in Philadelphia is the set of steps which Rocky ran up during his training. Those famous 68 steps are located on the northwest side of town and actually lead up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Look for it at 26th Street. After you have jogged up the steps, be sure to turn around and gaze back along Benjamin Franklin Parkway, where you can gain an excellent view of the downtown Philadelphia skyline.

Rocky's old South Philly neighborhood is a must see as well. In addition, you will want to make a stop by the Philadelphia City Hall, which Rocky routinely runs past while training for what would become his big break. The Italian Market, on Ninth Street, is also an important landmark as well. Look for it between Christian and Federal Streets.
