Museums in Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia is practically a museum by itself, considering the strong role the city has played in the history of the nation. From acting as the site of the Constitutional Convention to serving as the site for the signing of the Declaration of Independence, many of the events that helped to establish our current form of government first occurred in Philadelphia. Visitors will find a wide array of museums ranging from art to history to help make their visit to Philadelphia more enriching and interesting.

Franklin Institute and Science Museum

The doors to this museum officially opened to the public in 1934 for the purpose of honoring Ben Franklin and the varied inventions created during his lifetime. Today the museum has been expanded and is one of the premier science museums in the country. A hands-on approach to technology and science along with the presence of the Fels Planetarium have made this museum one of the most popular attractions in the city. Visitors will find an IMAX theater as well as an extensive array of exhibits, along with interactive presentations.

Philadelphia Museum of Art

At the end of Benjamin Franklin Parkway, visitors will discover the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The museum is recognized as one of the greatest art institutions in the world. Founded almost 125 years ago, the museum has been expanded extensively and today is home to more than 300,000 works of art covering a wealth of subjects.

Independence Seaport Museum

Situated between two dock areas opposite Walnut Street, Independence Seaport Museum is a maritime adventure that encourages exploration. One of the finest maritime collections of interactive exhibits is housed in the museum in addition to the cruiser, Olympia; that is docked in the port alongside the submarine, Becuna. Covering an impressive 11,000 square feet, the main gallery features activities and exhibits. The Workshop on the Water demonstrates traditional wooden ship building and restoration techniques.

Please Touch Museum

If you are looking for a museum to take the kids where you do not have to be afraid they will ruin something, this is it. The museum is dedicated to providing a fun filled, cultural, educational and most of all, hands-on experience to young families. Guests are encouraged to park strollers inside and then explore the variety of exhibits which encourage child and parent participation. Many of the exhibits focus on the emotional, cognitive and social areas of child development. Kids can make a cloud actually rain; explore a miniature grocery store and even star in their own show in the on-site television studio.

National Museum of American Jewish History

The only museum that is specifically dedicated to presenting and preserving the Jewish participation in United States history, the National Museum of American Jewish History is a popular attraction. A permanent exhibition, "Creating American Jews," is a great place to begin your journey through the museum. Small exhibits, which rotate on a regular basis, feature a variety of topics. Special events are also frequently offered throughout the year.
