The Palm Canyon Theatre is located in historic Palm Canyon Drive. The Theatre opened its doors in 1997 following the efforts of Bill and Sylvia Layne. After visiting the area for many years they thought that Palm Springs was missing out on having a regional theater which could host theatrical performances. Working with the City Council, and with the help of family and friends they set about converting an old school and gymnasium building. The result is the Palm Canyon Theatre which now has a 230-seat stadium style theater with plush velvet seats.
The aim of the theater is to provide entertainment and community outreach programs for the Coachella Valley Its first production was The Dessert Song and the theater has gone to put on many award-winning productions since it opening - recent shows have included the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Evita and My Fair Lady. The Theatre is also a venue for the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
The Theatre offers events involving children and the wider community including the Third Sunday Improv Jam, the Second Sunday Shakespeare and Spotlight on Musicals. It also has a Equity Membership Candidates program for post-graduates, and annual theatre and arts summer camp for aspiring actors. Over the five week camp children learn about improvisation, production, make-up, acting and voice coaching. Ballet and tap dancing lessons are offered at the Theatre catering for beginners and intermediate levels, and from 3 year olds to adults. A new addition to the programs are the theatrical jazz and hip hop lessons for both children and adults.
