The residents of Ottawa have all the opportunities they could want for education in culture with the Crichton Cultural Community Centre in Ottawa, ON. The Crichton Cultural Community Centre is part of the Public School system in Ottawa, although they originally started off as a small one-room school. This school has quite an interesting history of growth. The first school in the district of New Edinburgh was a slanted building that looked like a barn and sat on a 30-acre field. School was only held in the summer months. Through the years, the school changed buildings and locations many times, one of the locations also serving for their church, a room for their Sunday school and concerts. Some of these later schools were held year round, while others could only be held when it wasn't cold.
The Crichton school was moved to its present location in 1875. Originally, it consisted of only two years, but much more has been added through the many years they've used this school. By 1906, the school consisted of ten rooms.
The school excelled in many of their sports such as hockey, basketball and hockey. Many famous hockey players can accredit their knowledge from what they learned at Crichton.
Today the school is a large building that boasts of many fine academic qualities such as the manual training room, sewing room, playrooms and gymnasium. There is a large ground floor, which in addition to kindergarten, holds over 300 people for the many assemblies and concerts that are held there. The additions and remodeling that was done to the school gave it a total cost of $140,000, a cost well worth it for what they have to offer.
They provide many extracurricular activities and events for the purpose of education. Some of these events include Kickboxing, Yoga & Meditation, and Different types of dance lessons, Health & Wellness classes and Visual Arts. There are very little cultural or educational programs that Crichton doesn't offer.
