Diplomatic relations between Canada and the republic of Bulgaria first opened in 1966 and in 1967 the offices of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria were opened in Ottawa.
The primary objective of the Bulgarian Embassy is to strengthen and consolidate its links with Canada and to emphasise their common economic and political aspirations and their dedication to making the citizens of their respective countries feel secure.
The Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Ottawa is also concerned to establish links with Bulgarians living in Canada and to provide them with links and information about their motherland. To this end the Consular Office of the Embassy is open every day to provide Canadian Bulgarians with information and advice relating to their home country and their citizenship in Canada.
The Consular service of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Ottawa offers advice on the following matters to both Bulgarian and Canadian citizens. This advice includes the issue of visas, identification documents and Civil Status documents.
The Bulgarian Embassy is responsible for media coverage concerning Bulgaria and its representation in Canada thus it hopes to promote cultural and scientific exchanges and the provision of exhibitions and film.
The Bulgarian Embassy in Canada is keen to maintain its links with the Canadian Government and to instigate research into Bulgarian and Canadian domestic and foriegn policies as it seeks to encourage mutual trade and economic cooperation.
From 2004 until the present day the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria has operated under the guidance of a charge d'affaires; currently this is Mr Branimir Zaimov.
