The Lord Elgin - A Landmark Stay in Ottawa, ON

The Lord Elgin, A.D. 1941 is what the placard on the cornerstone of the Lord Elgin says.  A stately building built by the Ford Hotel Company in 1941, the owners named this landmark hotel after the Right Honorable James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, 12th Earl of Kincardine and Governor General of British North America from 1847 through 1854.

As impressive as the Right Honorable James Bruce and all of his titles are, so was the Lord Elgin Hotel when its builders first built it. It was an immediate landmark and prestigious hotel in the city of Ottawa. Designed by the prestigious firm of Ross and Macdonald, the Ford Hotel Company built The Lord Elgin to compete with the Chateau Laurier.

While the Chateau Laurier accommodated a frivolous crowd, Ford Hotel Company designed The Lord Elgin more fitting to the wartime economy. Its rooms were smaller in comparison to most luxury hotels and it sported no ballroom or conference rooms. Chiefly, it was for housing visiting dignitaries, government officials and military officials during the war.

Though not frivolous, The Lord Elgin has always had an elegant façade and has always enjoyed status as a top quality accommodation, except for a brief period of decline in the 1980's when its owners allowed it to fall in to disrepair.

While the 8th Earl of Elgin never graced the Lord Elgin Hotel with a visit, his great grandson, the Right Honorable Andrew Bruce the present and 11th Earl of Elgin and 15th Earl of Kincardine not only distinguished the Hotel with his presence but he also served as its honorable chairman for several years after the visit.

With the recent passage of the hotel's 60th birthday, the hotel's owners have redesigned all of the guest rooms in the Biedermeier style, which is a style that emerged in Europe after the Napoleonic wars. This clean, modern adaptation of the French Chateau is in line with the design style that was popular during the original Lord Elgin's life. Because of the popularity of the Tulip Festival in Ottawa each year, The Lord Elgin Hotel also now sports a Tulip art theme throughout the hotel.

In addition to these updates, The Lord Elgin Hotel has updated its facilities by adding meeting rooms, fitness rooms and sixty new guest rooms for the pleasure of its guests. Atlific Hotels & Resorts, one of Canada's most renowned luxury hotel management companies, led The Elgin in to this new era.  The historic expansion ensured that spacious and luxurious accommodations will meet the needs of every guest throughout the future of The Lord Elgin Hotel. The Lord Elgin has celebrated the grand re-introduction of this landmark hotel to visitors of Ottawa.

If you visit Canada's capitol city of Ottawa, what better place could you stay than this landmark hotel that the Ford Hotel Company built to accommodate distinguished guests to this lovely city? You will be treated like the royal personage for which the hotel was named every time you visit.
