Well's Built Museum of African American History & Culture in Orlando, FL features over 6,000 square feet of exhibition space and virtually all of it is taken up with some interesting historical displays that highlight some of the most famous names in music history. It is housed in a hotel built by local African American physician Dr. Monroe Wells who built it as well as the South Street Casino next door so that African Americans could have a place to stay as well as perform in the still segregated 1930's south.
Located in the Parramore District of Orlando, this cozy red brick building that houses the Well's Built Museum doesn't seem like it housed some of the greatest names in music like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Ray Charles. You will be fascinated with the historical displays and photographs which depict the black population in the area and their plight in fighting segregation.
The hotel which houses most of the displays still retains the same façade as when it was still operational as a hotel and a guestroom has been refurbished to depict what the rooms looked like back in the 1930s. There are also re-enactments of historical scenes as well as mini-performances available too.
You will also get to see ledgers which show how much the entertainers who paid as well as hotel documents, slave records, exhibits about the Negro League baseball league, pictures and much more. The original elements of the architecture and designs of the period can also be seen. All in all, this can be seen for a very reasonable price — free!
