Parrot Jungle Island will give you the true meaning of a jungle. You'll see over 500 species of plants and 3,000 exotic animals. Some of the many attractions here at Parrot Jungle Island are jungle trails, plant nurseries, aviaries, animal stage shows, educational exhibits and also a petting farm. The most exciting part of Parrot Jungle Island is Jungle Theater, an open-air arena where you'll see the wildlife doing their performances. Another highlight here is Parrot Bowl, a 1200 seat attraction that has many world famous bird shows including trained cockatoos, parrots and macaws. Other special events include the park's large collection of amphibians and reptiles such as a 21-foot crocodile and a rare albino alligator.
Parrot Jungle Island was started by Franz Scherr, an Austrian feed and supply store owner in Homestead. Scherr owned a few birds, which he easily trained, which is how he got his idea to start his own jungle. He started his jungle by renting 20 acres of land, working the land, building an entrance building and ordering 25 Macaws to start his business. People started paying to see them and his dream was becoming a reality. He developed his jungle to include many flowers, birds and trees. He eventually was up to 2,000 different plant varieties and 1,100 tropical birds. After his death it privately purchased by business people in the area and aviculturists. .
