Located at East Chicago Avenue, the Museum of Contemporary Art was established in 1945, and holds the repute of being the largest museum of its ilk in the country.
Devoted to allowing art aficionados, access to the most noteworthy artistic renditions of today's day and age, the Museum embraces artistic expression in an exhaustive array of media, which ranges from fine paintings and photography to motion film, dance and music. The museum hosts a number of temporary exhibitions from time to time, to allow for a diverse and fresh experience each time you stop by. Past exhibitions have included 'Mapping the Self' which a uniquely themed collection of photography, drawings, videos and sound depicting the ways in which artists use maps to understand and explore the world around them. Yet another stalwart has been the 'Upon An Ether Sea' collection, which explored the use of vessels and water in contemporary art, while the 'Here / Not There' series was comprised of four demonstrations of how performance and visual art could co-exist.
The Museum of Contemporary Art also showcases exceptional dance, theatrical, poetry and musical performances to bring out the diversity that contemporary art embodies. Visitors are also allowed the unique opportunity of interacting with the artists and participating in post-show talks to gain a better understanding of the thought propelling the performance and also a chance to hone their own skills.
For food to nourish your artistic sojourn, treat yourself to fine gourmet cuisine at Puck's, which offers you a prolific seasonal menu with Mediterranean and Asian undertones. You can even call ahead to arrange for a docent-guided tour of the Museum of Contemporary Art if you plan to visit in a group, or simply avail of the free daily tours that the museum conducts to gain deeper insights into the exhibitions, or even skim through the highlights of each collection.
