Founded in 1996, the Miami Art Museum was established as a means to allow local connoisseurs the opportunity to view some of the most renowned works of contemporary art to further their course of artistic discovery, while also encourage up-and-coming artists to showcase their talent on an acclaimed platform.
The museum's permanent collection is based on works by Miami-based artists and boasts of names like Carlos Alfonzo, Fernando Botero, Rubén Torres-Llorca, Lorna Simpson and Ana Mendieta, to name a few. To allow visitors an even more intimate experience, the Miami Art Museum organizes their collection into uniquely themed rotating exhibitions, so that there's always something new in store for you, every time you visit. Some of the most lauded exhibitions have included Figuratively Speaking, which details the effect of humanist concerns of non-conventional artists on their artistic expression, while also the Visual Poetics: Art and the World exposition, which has showcased fifty-six works by some of the most prolific international artists from all over the globe, with a special emphasis on language and its role in politics, psychology and as a form of expression.
The Miami Art Museum also conducts a number of educational programs and workshops from time to time to allow students, youth and families access to lectures and gallery talks, while also detailed exhibition tours to gain a better understanding of the specific theme explored.
The Museum Park, which is now known as the Bicentennial Park is considered by many to be one of the Museum's most immense contributions to art in Miami, having transformed underused and neglected property into an exquisite mélange of greenery and cultural exhibits.
The Miami Art Museum welcomes visitors from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is charged at about $8 per person, with special discounts for children and seniors.
