A Brief History
- Unmanned hot air balloons are first mentioned in Chinese history when airborne lanterns were used for military signaling. There is also some speculation that over 1500 years ago hot air balloons were used by the Nazca Indians of Peru to construct the artwork of the Azca Plain. Two brothers from France were the first to successfully create a hot air balloon capable of carrying passengers. After testing with unmanned balloons and flights with animals, the first successful human flight took place in France in November of 1783. The first hot air balloon flight within the United States occurred January 3rd in 1793, with George Washington being a witness to the event. During the Civil War, hot air balloons were used by the North for observation while they were used for trench warfare during World War I. The first modern hot air balloon was designed and built in 1960 by Ed Yost.
