The Virginia Opera is a respected and award-winning opera company that presents high quality performances under the artistic direction of Maestro Peter Mark. Over 50,000 people attend the Opera's performances annually, and over 200,000 thousand students and members of local communities get involved in its innovative outreach and educational programs.
The Virginia Opera was founded by Edythe C. Harrison in 1974, and launched its productions at the Norfolk Center Theater. The Opera began performing in the Landmark Theater in Richmond, formerly known as the Mosque, in 1977. The Richmond Friends of Opera was formed to support its annual productions in the city. The Opera also performs at the impressive concert hall in the Center for the Arts in Fairfax. In 1994 the Opera became the 'Official Opera company of the Commonwealth of Virginia'. Today its program includes modern works, traditional favorites such as the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, plus classic Italian, German and Russian productions.
The Opera's outreach program is described as one of the best in the nation. It includes a range of innovative events such as student Night at the Opera performances and matinees. Touring programs such as Operation Opera bringing opera to clubs and community groups, and there are also family opera days.
The Opera holds annual gala events and has its own membership program - The Virginia Opera Guild - where members benefits include discounts on tickets and merchandise, and exclusive backstage tours. The free Up Close events held before performances give visitors an opportunity to learn more about the opera.
