The Norfolk Yacht and Country Club was established over 110 years ago to promote an interest in yachting, boating and other outdoor activities.& Although the Club has a long history, it has very modern facilities including recent improvements to the harbor area, a state-of-the-art fitness facility and swimming pools.
The boating facilities, updated in 2003, include four floating piers with slips for around 160 boats and boat storage facilities. There are also launching ramps to allow access to the Lafayette River and a full-time Harbor master service. The yacht club members take part in many local and larger competitions including the Keel Bat Spring Series, Point to Point Regatta and the annual High School Regattas. The Clubhouse has attractive verandas and balconies with excellent views over the River, and dining areas including a formal dining room, and The Deck — less formal dining for families. These facilities, along with the Grand Ballroom that has a sunken dance floor, are available to members for private functions.
Outside there is an Olympic-sized swimming pool that is often used by local swimming leagues, and a dive pool and children's pool. There are also 10 tennis courts — with different surfaces and and 2 squash courts. The Family Fitness Facility opened in 2001 has a 25-yard indoor pool, a sauna and steam room. The center is equipped for weights and circuit training and cardiovascular workouts. The all-purpose studio has a full program of exercise classes, and there is also a childcare center and Youth Room for younger members.
