The Norfolk Parks and Urban Forestry Division endeavors to enhance the local community by focusing their efforts on developing and preserving the natural environment and landscape in Norfolk.
Over the years, this division has painstakingly restored, created and protected islands of greenery throughout the city by way of tree-lined parkways, over 100 athletic fields, and numerous verdant parks and school grounds. The department also ensures that waterways are not encroached upon and landscaped areas are maintained whenever new construction is undertaken.
The core responsibilities of the Norfolk Parks and Urban Forestry are divided into two fractions — one that protects the natural environment within the city and also creates parks and outdoor public recreational areas to allow residents to rejuvenate themselves while also educating them about the importance of conservation; and the other section which focuses on Urban Forestry by planting new saplings and protecting the existing trees to maintain the ecological harmony, while also augmenting the city's aesthetic value.
The department also welcomes volunteers to dedicate their time and efforts towards distributing seeds for tree planting and to assist in conducting an inventory on the city trees. If you are looking to be a part of this worthy mission, you can contact the department over the telephone at 757 441 2400 or download a registration form from the website.
