Moses Myers House in Norfolk, VA
The Moses Myers House in Norfolk, VA is a museum full of collections from the prosperous Jewish family of Moses Myers. Her was an American entrepreneur who built the house to accommodate his growing family.
The house was built in 1820 and was the home to many generations of Myers, including Barton Myers, a Norfolk mayor. In 1892 this mayor worked on restoring the house to its former glory since by that time it had started to deteriorate.
In 2004/2005 extensive renovations were done to the house. The renovations including cleaning the plaster and painting it a flat white to imitate the original whitewash. The architectural ornament was cleaned and an eight-inch 200-year accumulation of paint was removed from the ceiling in the front hall.
Renovations continue on the Moses Myers House thanks to the Garden Club of Virginia.
The Moses Myers House claim to distinction is that it was one of the first brick homes built after the Revolutionary War in Norfolk. Inside the house visitors will find portraits of Moses Myers and his wife, Eliza, completed by well-known artist, Gilbert Stuart.
The museum is located at Bank and E. Freemason Streets. Admission is free with tours offered hourly through to 3 pm. Hours of operation are Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 4 pm.
The Moses Myers House is affiliated with the Chrysler Museum of Art, and has a museum shop that offers unique and unusual items. Patrons can buy jewelry, art books and cards. Museum members get a 10% discount.
The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
