For many of the people that live in Norfolk, Virginia, the Hermitage Foundation is a great and beautiful place to go to or visit. Not only is it beautiful but it is also peaceful.
For those that have never heard of the Hermitage Gardens and Museum, it is a historic home/museum from the early 20th century that is a non-profit organization; which has a large variety of art from all around the world. Also, the museum has contemporary gallery exhibits, as well. Outside of the gallery, you will be able to see the most beautiful 12 acres of gardens (which are formally set), some natural woodland as well as educational wetlands, a studio artists program, and also the visual arts school.
The museum was originally built in 1908 by William and Florence Sloane, however, because of all the different types of arts Florence kept adding rooms until 1936; when it ended up being a 42 room house. However, the Hermitage Foundation was not founded until 1937; but did not open publicly until 1942. When it came to art, they kept up in times. In fact, when visiting the museum you will find that there is over 2,800 pieces in the Sloane Collection; and some of them are ancient Chinese ceremonial bronzes, European ceramics and paintings, hand painted windows from Germany, Indian Chola bronze statues, Spanish furniture and religious icons, as well as many American paintings and sculptures.
When it comes to the beautiful grounds, the Hermitage is known for miles. In fact, the Lafayette River is on 3 sides of the gardens, forest, and wetlands property. For hundreds of animals and plants, the wetlands provide a natural habitat. In the gardens, you will see great mixtures of flowers, trees and shrubs; such as roses, peonies, Russian sage beautifully grown around cobblestone paths, benches and sculptures.
No matter what you're reasoning for visiting, whether it is for a wedding or just for a tour, you will be surprised at the natural beauty of the house and property. It is definitely something that you will never forget.
