Fort Norfolk in Norfolk, VA
Fort Norfolk in Norfolk, VA is perhaps one of the best kept historic secrets in the state. Many people drive by there every day and do not know it is there. However, you will learn during a visit to this site that it is a War of 1812 location that is one of the best preserved in the entire country. Located on Front Street, it is still an actual fort and you have to pass through gates in order to enter.
This fort supplied the ammunition to the Confederates and of the 19 harbor front forts that were in existence back then, it is the only one today to remain that was formally authorized by President Washington himself. Many structures that are still in existence are original and date back to around 1810.
You will see intact earthworks, ramparts, embankments, barracks, guard houses, a dungeon and more over this four acre fort. Something else that you will discover is that Fort Norfolk was recaptured by the Union and used as a prison. It turned into Navy Depot years later and then the Army Corps of Engineers took it over. They still own Fort Norfolk today and a historical society is responsible for making improvements and restorations.
This fort is small but it was mighty. You can take tours from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the tourist season and the admission is free. Some people have reported spotting wild life in the area like feral cats, so be on the lookout when you go!
