Niagara-on-the-Lake, the church is still a fully operational parish which serves the citizens of the area.
Besides a place of worship, St. Mark's Church served as a hospital during the War of 1812 but the next year it was burned down by soldiers. By 1822, the church was rebuilt and today its Rectory contains one of the oldest libraries in the Ontario area with priceless tomes dating back to the 16th century.
One of the most interesting aspects of St. Mark's Church near Niagara Falls, Ontario is that the cemetery area of the church is one of the oldest burial grounds in the area. Take a stroll through the cemetery and read some of the interesting inscriptions and other telling quotes on the older tombstones, particularly from the 19th century.
Another thing you can see in the cemetery at St. Mark's Church is some of the rifle pits that were dug by American soldiers during the War of 1812. These pits add another historical element to the area here at
Niagara-on-the-Lake. In addition, the church building has a number of different inscriptions throughout the place which reveal the area's history.
The area is a pretty location with lovely landscaping and picturesque settings with the stone walls bordering the property and flowers blooming in the midst of the warm season. It's a great place to visit in between the more touristy places in the Niagara area.
