Fort Erie has such a rich history, that it can be traced as far back as over 12,000 years ago. It was the local site of the war of 1812, and the greater Fort Erie area was also a popular destination for slaves that were fleeing from the United States. The Mildred M. Mahoney Doll's House Gallery is believed to be haunted, and it's home to all kinds of fascinating doll house miniatures. It's one of the world's largest collections of dollhouses in North America. It's also said, that this museum sits on top of an underground tunnel used by slaves crossing the Niagara River.
There are multiple other museums throughout Fort Erie, there are some dedicated to the war of 1812 that even have reenactments throughout the year. There is the Fort Erie Railroad Museum, where you can even climb into the cab of one of the old trains. The Fort Erie Historical Museum is located at the former Town Hall of 1874 and features a 4,000-year-old collection of artifacts that were uncovered at the Peace Bridge Site. Fort Erie is located only about 30 minutes southeast of Niagara Falls and worthy of a day trip idea.
