The beautiful Dufferin Islands nature preserve can be found just one mile from the Falls and is a popular destination for fishing, picnicking and hiking. The gentle stream which distinctly characterizes Dufferin Islands is actually the fast and furious Niagra River, which is pushed into the area by a tilting of the Horseshoe Falls rock shelf. The preserve itself is made up of 11 different islands and upon entering the park, visitors will immediately notice the twenty two small bridges that connect each of these islands. This is truly a breathtaking hiking experience.
Those who are fond of fishing will also enjoy floating out and casting from dawn till dusk (Dufferin's open hours). The park also participates regularly in the "Winter Festival of Lights" going on from mid-November to January, when a number of different animated displays are placed on and throughout the islands. Whether hiking, fishing or just enjoying a picnic underneath one of the many large oaks and poplars, a trip to Dufferin Islands will help to add something extra to your stay in Niagra Falls.
