See the world's largest paint-by-number mural, finished by nearly 1000 people, and more unique pieces, on the streets of Welland. Few knew at the time that this project to beautify the city would become the largest open-air gallery in the world. Artists were hired to work on a citywide mural series that would include nearly thirty paintings of great stature, some reaching three stories tall and 80 feet long. Subjects of area history and culture, including the Welland trolley, fair, and canals were decided upon and the painting began in 1986. Since then, the project is continuing even today, adding new walls of color to the city at various times.
The city of Welland has a special past, being the site of the Battle of Cooks Mills, the last battle between the United States and Canada before peace was made. This and other historic highlights are depicted in the murals. Most of these works are in the downtown area, so a drive through is the perfect way to spot them. But for those who have time to stop, a close-up view will bring the experience of these murals to a more personal level, and offer a greater understanding of the historic events. Main Street, Division, Lincoln, Niagara Street, and Hellems Avenue are the primary locations to find these colorful and unique pieces. Enjoy unique art, and historic sites in the city of Welland.
