Whirpool Flats Hike at Whirlpool State Park in Niagara Falls, NY

Niagara Falls offers more than grand views of the famous rushing water. Visitors will find a variety of hiking, walking and biking trails at the Falls' Whirlpool State Park.

Along with the panorama visible from the upper levels, the base of the Niagara Gorge offers viewing at Whirlpool Flats Viewing Area. Starting at the park shelter, hikers follow the half-mile path to the Whirlpool stairs.

At the bottom of the 340 steps, guests can briefly rest at one of the picnic tables. Head to the left to reach the Whirlpool Flats Viewing Area.

The Whirlpool Rapids are some of the most turbulent rapids in the world, classified as Type VI, or extreme.

The Niagara Escarpment is also visible from the park's upper level. A product of erosion over millions of years, the escarpment continues its eroding march toward southward.

Home to 109 acres and many opportunities for recreation, Whirlpool State Park lies approximately two and a half miles from the falls, featuring a huge whirlpool at the top, and turbulent rapids at the bottom.
