With historic landmarks, entertainment, museums and more, Niagara Falls offers many activities for those looking at what to do after seeing the Falls. Many activities in the Niagara area offer a greater knowledge of the area's development and culture, and can be a lot of fun as well. A trip to St. Catherines, just 12 miles northwest of the Falls, will bring you closer to interesting history, artwork, and technological wonders. The Welland Canal should be on the top of the list of places to see. The Lock 3 Viewing Complex in St. Catherines is an exciting experience and a perfect place to observe the marvel of giant freights as they are lifted over the Niagara Escarpment. Designed in the early 1800s, this technology provides a safe detour around Niagara Falls for ships. Watch as the locks are filled with water, allowing the vessels to elevate along the canal and up the wall of rock. And next door to the viewing complex are the St. Catherines Museum and the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum. The St. Catherines Museum offers a comprehensive history the city and its native peoples, the Welland Canal, and the area that developed and thrived around it. Take a few more steps to the Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum to visit the best of Ontario's national sport. Outstanding lacrosse players and teams are featured in video presentations and special exhibits that show off the history and development of this well-loved game. Another nearby treat are the Welland city murals, just 25 minutes southwest of Niagara and directly 15 miles south of St. Catherines. View the world's largest paint by number mural and largest open-air gallery in the world all in one place. These sizeable paintings cover the walls of many buildings in downtown Welland, and make a drive through the city an inspirational exeperience. Clifton Hill is the apex of entertainment and nightlife in the area, with tons of restaurants, Casino Niagara, Fallsview Casino, the Great Canadian Midway complex and more. The Canadian Midway offers 70,000 square feet of indoor family entertainment, including games, rides, such as the haunted house ride, Ghostblasters Dark Ride and the FX Thrill Ride Theatre, with a motion simulator. Pool tables, bowling, SportsZone Bar and Boston Pizza keep the upstairs crowded with patrons. A great way to enjoy the countryside is a trip to wine country. Find out how they make icewine with a trip to the Chateau de Charmes winery, or try a free tour of Joseph's Estate Wines winery on Route 62. Tempt your palate with the best wine in the region and dip into some of the unique history and artistry that has influenced the wineries and their wines.
