Getting In and Around Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is easy to reach by all modes of transportation. When considering transportation it should be noted that there is Niagara Falls, Ontario, on the Canadian side, and Niagara Falls, N.Y. on the United States side. Both sides are linked to the highway systems of Canada and the United States.

VEHICLES

  • For tourists visiting the Niagara Region, the Peace Bridge serves as a friendly crossing to historic and rich destinations on both sides of the U.S. and Canadian borders. The main approach to the Peace Bridge is the New York State Thruway (I-190) near downtown Buffalo, N.Y.
  • A vehicle registration form from your state's government will establish that you own your vehicle. If you are driving a rented or borrowed vehicle, or towing a trailer that does not belong to you, you should have documentation from the legal owner establishing that you have permission to use it.
  • Radar detection devices are illegal in many Canadian provinces, so it is best to leave all detection devices at home.
  • By law, seat belt use is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle driven in Canada. Adults are responsible for ensuring that anyone younger than 16 in a vehicle they are driving is wearing a seat belt. It is important to remember that all speed limits, distances, and fuel prices are measured in the metric system in Canada.

AIRPORTS

  • Niagara Falls International Airport (airport code IAG), located 4 miles east of Niagara Falls, is the recommended pick-up location for Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. IAG sits on the U.S.-Canadian border. All major car rental agencies are available.
  • Buffalo Niagara International Airport (airport code BNIA) is located 1/2 hour from Niagara Falls (New York side). Serviced by 10 domestic and international airlines, the airport averages 90 daily flights. All major car rental agencies are available.

BUS SERVICE

  • People Mover System. The Niagara Parks "People Movers" travel daily along one of the prettiest drives in the world... the Niagara Parkway. Running from May to October, enjoy the comforts of an air-conditioned motor coach as you travel along the 19-mile loop running from just above the Falls to Queenston Heights Park. The fee to park in the People Mover lot includes unlimited transportation and transfers on the system. Times vary based upon time of year and day of the week.
  • Niagara Ontario Transit. This bus service connects all areas of the Canadian city and the Niagara Parks Commission's People Mover System.

BORDER CROSSING

  • Whether traveling by auto, bicycle or on foot, American citizens are required to show proper forms of identification, including birth certificate and photo identification, when entering Canada. With the exception of seeing-eye dogs, travelers accompanied by family pets must present an authentic certificate of rabies vaccination.

If you plan to stay overnight in Niagara Falls, parking at your hotel and using the public transportation will get you were you want to go. If you're visiting for just the day from May to October, plan to park at the People Mover facility and begin your journey from there. If you visit from November to April, parking is free almost anywhere in the area, so you can plan to adventure about in your own wheels. Enjoy!
