Tompkins Square Park in New York City, NY

Although Tompkins Square Park has been seen during the later half of the 20th century as an area mainly known for squatting and radical demonstrations, in recent years the park has seen noted improvement in its level of safety for the average bystander. Historically, Tompkins Square Park has been a center for activists and protests. From protesting the Vietnam War to riots between police and protestors over the area's squatting situation, Tompkins Square has certainly seen its share of excitement in the past.

Today, Tompkins Square has calmed down considerably, but still hasn't lost the spirit of its past. Throughout the year a number of festivals are held in the park, including Wigstock, Charlie Parker Jazz Festival and the annual "Riot Reunion" concert. Whether you're looking for something to do or a great place to walk your dog, don't let Tompkins Square Park's past scare you from experiencing a great park setting in New York City.
