Although several New Yorkers have become President of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt is the only President to have been born and raised in New York City. The original house that Roosevelt was born in was sadly demolished in 1916, but shortly after his death a new home was constructed on the site of the old one. Roosevelt's widow and his two sisters carefully monitored the process, to make sure that it was accurately reconstructed. Almost half of the furnishings in the home that stands there today, come from the original house, and the rest were contributed by members of the Roosevelt family.
A National Park Ranger is there to offer tours of the home, that last approximately 40 minutes. There is also an adjoining museum on the first floor that contains drawings, photos, cartoons, news clippings, and memorabilia. The Teddy Roosevelt Birthplace is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are offered every hour on the hour.
